River Cleanup : This Saturday, September 8th, volunteers from around Maine gathered to clean the river banks around French Island that have been recently exposed as a result of the removal of the river dam at Great Works. The dam removal is the first stage of opening up the river for the unimpeded passage of native fish to their historic spawning grounds. Irish Stories : On Thursday, 10 November, we were graced by the presence of Niall de Burca, an Irish story teller in the old tradition. Traveling from the west coast of Ireland, Niall shared stories from the mother country with all of us here at RES. His captivating presentation drew in the students, who often chimed in with their own input into his lyrical and descriptive narrative.

A Day at the Zoo : This Friday May 20th, Sure Start and Kindergarten students travelled to Nürnberg to enjoy a day of learning about the animals on display at their zoo. Thanks to the tremendous support of many parents and sponsors, students were able to break out into small groups and freely wander about the extensive grounds of the zoo. While we normally showcase our students, the animals were the focus of the day. So please enjoy the many shots of the animals we collected on the trip.

Peter Pan : This Wednesday May 18th, students at Rainbow ES presented their Spring Production. The classic tale was adapted to a short student production that comprised 35 students in the cast with support from another 12 students plus parents and staff. The entire student body came out to watch the play in the afternoon. The performance was repeated for a packed house of parents in the evening. The play was a tremendous success not only for those who were part of the production, but it was also a very enjoyable watch for everyone in the audience.

Earth Day : This Tuesday, May 3rd, Fifth Graders from Rainbow joined other students from Illesheim ES and Ansbach ES, as well as students from local German schools Markt Bergel and Oberdachstetten, for a celebration of Earth Day. We traveled to a forested area 20 kilometers north of Ansbach to spend the day learning about planet earth. There were several stations set up to introduce students to aspects of the forest, amphibious animals, pond life, goats and sheep herding, energy production and the role of fire fighters in protecting the environment. The students all enjoyed the time outdoors and having a chance to learn about the environment. They also had a chance to transplant some flowers and bring them home in pots that they decorated for themselves. View our school web site for more information about Rainbow Elementary School.

Columbus On Trial : This week students at Rainbow Elementary brought back Christopher Columbus from the past to stand trial for crimes against humanity. An aggressive defense team called in King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella, and Pope Innocent VIII to testify in his defense. The prosecution relied on testimony from Awarak Indian natives and a Catholic priest known as Las Casas. A stern judge heard the jury report loud and clear: "Guilty as Charged." Penalty for C. Columbus was postponed, as a sentence of death is a bit difficult to impose on a person who is already dead. Congratulations to the talented students who presented the trial, and thanks to the faculty and staff for helping out with this historic occasion. KAYA Visit : We are pleased that students from Howon Elementary School, Anyang, Kyeonggi Province visited us this past Wednesday, April 28th. This is part of our Good Neighbor Program to improve the relationship between our Korea and the USA. They spent a day at OAES learning about our school system. The students were placed in various classes and enjoyed a typical day at an American school. At the end of the day we all enjoyed a short Korean dance performance.

Aquarium Trip : Fourth Graders view marine life on a trip to the Coex Aquarium in Seoul Monday, 22 March, 2010. Given a list of 61 questions that needed answering, they, as well as their parents, were focused on the exibits. The marine zoo is a world class aquarium with over 220 separate tanks that together hold more than 3,000 tons of water. Students could view more than 650 representative species of animals that live in, or near to, salt and fresh water.

Third Grade Field Trip : On Wednesday, October 15th, two Third Grade classes had a taste of Korea. The morning was spent at Osan City Hall learning about the governmental structure of this Korean city. This was followed by a walk to the open air market south of City Hall. After a lunch at Lotte Mart, we travelled out to Shinri Elementary school for a visit with some local farmers to learn about fall harvest. Students were engaged, took copious notes, and had a fun break from the classroom.

Field Trip to Seoul : On November 18, 2009 the combined Third and Fourth Grade Class of Mrs. McGuire took a field trip to Seoul. The morning the class was given a tour of the Arirang Broadcasting studio. Arirang serves the over one million foreigners living in Korea with English language programming. Students met the well know radio and TV personality Robert Holley and were even part of his radio broadcast that day. The afternoon the class had a tour of the Hanaro Market, Korea's largest market of fresh produce and other food items. There was an abundance of samples for the students to try, and they were adventurous in their tasting. Many of the students left the market with some food items. Many thanks to Mr. Choe, the OAES Korean Culture Instructor, for organizing this day for the students.

Folk Village Trip : On Friday, 23 October 2009, the combined First and Second Grade Classes took a field trip to the Korean Folk Village. Here the students split into small groups and with one of the many volunteer chaperones that accompanied them for the trip, they headed out to explore the large park. The weather was enjoyable, and everyone had plenty to eat and a lot to see.
